Cheek Implants

What is a Cheek Implant?

Cheek implants or cheek augmentation is a surgical procedure that creates fuller, more prominent cheekbones. The facial mid-cheek implants are designed to augment specific regions of the cheek with deficient volume such as the cheekbone or malar region and mid-cheek or sub-malar region, by improving facial contours and adding definition to the cheek area.

Malar implants provide projection of the cheekbones by direct placement over the bony structure. Submalar implants round out a sunken or hollowed appearance of the cheeks to provide more balance and support to the midface. Lastly, a combined cheek implant improves both areas simultaneously.

Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Samuel Hahn of the Maryland Center for Facial Plastic Surgery performs cheek implants for patients throughout Baltimore, Towson, Columbia, and surrounding communities looking to improve their facial volume and contours.

What are the Benefits of a Cheek Implant?

Facial implant surgery provides the most natural result, using custom implants to mimic the natural bone structure. Unlike injectable fillers, facial implant procedures are permanent and better address volume loss or natural lack of definition. When correcting volume loss with injectable facial procedures, repeated treatments are necessary to maintain the result, increasing the risk of migration, overfilling, and the unwanted “pillow face” look.

Prominent cheeks are aesthetically pleasing, however, for some, the cheeks can be poorly developed or lose volume as a result of aging, resulting in a flattened appearance of the face.

The Benefits of cheek implants include:

Improved projection and definition of the cheekbones

Increased volume in the mid-face

Improved facial contours and youthfulness

Improve loss of volume

Correct deformities from facial trauma

Cheek implant surgery offers a one-time solution to creating a more youthful appearance that balances the face youthful appearance and sculpts pleasing contours.

How is a Cheek Implant Performed?

A cheek implant is performed through a small incision inside your upper lip – meaning there is no appearance of scars post-procedure. A precise pocket is made along the cheekbone where the implant, which is made from a solid but flexible material such as silicone or porous polyethylene (Medpor®), can be secured.

These silicone implants are customized to the individual patient and have a wide range of shapes and sizes that are altered by the cosmetic surgeon to sit perfectly in the deficient areas. The level of control when making this type of implant is something that cannot be achieved by dermal fillers or fat transfers, making the procedure ideal for many looking to achieve a more sculpted, attractive appearance. Fat injections may also be combined with the procedure to provide comprehensive rejuvenation and further enhance facial volume.

Similar procedures can be done for the chin and jaw with chin implants and jaw implants. During your consultation, Dr. Hahn will recommend the best-suited plastic surgery procedures and non-surgical treatments that meet your aesthetic goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Cheek Implant?

There are many factors that determine the best treatment options for facial aesthetic surgery. Your facial features including the bony and soft tissue structures of your cheeks along with the balance of your face will be considered. Most important are your personal goals and desires.

During your consultation, Dr. Samuel Hahn will provide an individualized assessment and treatment plan to determine if you are a good candidate for chin augmentation.

Downtime & Recovery

Most patients can expect a relatively short downtime, with many returning to their normal activities within a week or so. However, it is crucial to follow post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Hahn to ensure optimal healing and results.

Following the surgery, it’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the implant site. Ice packs can be used to minimize swelling, and prescribed medications will help manage any pain. Patients are usually advised to rest and keep their head elevated in the first few days to accelerate the healing process.

During the first week, it is common to experience some stiffness in the facial area. Most individuals can resume light activities, but rigorous activities and exercise should be avoided for at least two weeks. Additionally, patients should avoid any facial massage or pressure on the cheeks until cleared by Dr. Hahn.

Follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the recovery progress. Dr. Hahn will check the healing of the incisions, position of the implants, and address any concerns. Generally, you can expect to make a full recovery within six when residual swelling has subsided.

How Much Does a Cheek Implant Cost?

There are numerous factors that go into the cost of a cheek implant procedure. The cost of the procedure will depend on the extent of surgery including the degree of projection and added volume necessary to achieve the ideal result. During your consultation with Dr. Hahn, we will provide you with a clear breakdown of costs and explain your payment options.
