Laser Hair Removal

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure designed to significantly reduce unwanted hair from various parts of the body, leaving skin smooth and hair-free. By targeting the melanin in hair follicles with concentrated light energy, the BAREit® device and Forever BARE BBL® effectively disrupt the hair growth cycle without damaging the surrounding skin.

These treatments are suitable for all skin types and skin colors, offering a more permanent solution compared to traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, or plucking.

At Maryland Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Samuel Hahn, we offer advanced laser hair removal services to our patients in Baltimore, Towson, Columbia, and the surrounding Maryland areas.

Where Can Laser Hair Removal Be Performed?

Laser hair removal with BAREit® and Forever BARE BBL® devices is versatile and effective for removing unwanted hair from almost any area of the body, including:

  • Face (excluding the eye area)
  • Underarms
  • Bikini line
  • Legs
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Stomach

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Among the range of cosmetic procedures available, laser provides near-permanent hair reduction, leaving patients with hassle-free smooth skin.

Compared to any other form of hair removal, none come close to laser for a variety of reasons:

Precision: Laser hair removal devices target hair precisely while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. This precision is particularly useful for areas like the face, where other methods might be risky or ineffective.

Speed: Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. Small areas, like the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute, while larger areas, like the back or legs, may take about an hour.

Effectiveness: Laser hair removal is highly effective for most individuals. It can significantly reduce hair growth, leading to smoother skin and decreased reliance on temporary hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, or plucking.

Less Ingrown Hairs: Those with coarse hair are more likely to suffer from ingrown hairs and irritation. Unlike shaving or waxing, laser hair removal doesn’t cause ingrown hairs. It can help reduce their occurrence over time by eliminating hair from the follicle.

Treat Hard-to-Reach Areas: Areas of unwanted body hair such as the back can be particularly difficult to reach when trying to shave or wax alone. With laser, you can achieve near-permanent hair removal and leave the hassle behind.

Long-term Hair Reduction: While not completely permanent, there is minimal future hair growth if any, and the sparse finer hairs that may occasionally are often unnoticeable. Some patients find they may not need maintenance treatments for over a year and enjoy long-term results.

How Should I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

Proper preparation is key to maximizing the effectiveness of your laser hair removal treatment and ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Here are some essential steps to prepare for your laser hair removal session:

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Minimize sun exposure to the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Sunburn or tanning can increase the risk of side effects from the laser treatment.

  • Skip Other Hair Removal Methods: Do not wax, pluck, or undergo electrolysis in the area to be treated for at least 4 weeks prior to your laser treatment. These methods remove the hair root, which is necessary for the laser to target effectively. Shaving is allowed and encouraged, as it preserves the hair shaft below the skin surface.

  • Shave the Area: Shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. This minimizes the risk of surface skin irritation from the laser targeting longer hairs above the skin.
  • Cleanse the Skin: Ensure the treatment area is clean and free of makeup, lotions, deodorant, or any other skin products. These substances can interfere with the laser’s ability to target the hair follicles effectively.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment to avoid irritation in the treated area after the procedure.

What is Laser Hair Removal Treatment Like?

Laser hair removal treatments are quick, with minimal discomfort. Before the procedure, the target area will be cleaned, and a cooling gel may be applied to minimize any discomfort and you will be given eye protection. In addition, ice packs or topical anesthetic may also be used to further minimize any discomfort.

During the treatment, the BAREit® or Forever BARE BBL® device will be passed over the skin, delivering light energy that is absorbed by the hair follicles. Patients often describe the sensation as a light rubber band snap or warm pinprick against the skin with each pulse. The length of each session varies depending on the treatment area but typically ranges from a few minutes to an hour.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Ideal candidates for laser hair removal are individuals looking to reduce or eliminate unwanted hair on any part of the body.

While previously this form of treatment was reserved for those with light skin and dark hair, new advancements in technology in the type of laser used have made the treatment suitable and effective for those with dark skin as well.

The treatment is effective on a wide range of hair colors and skin types, thanks to the advanced technology of the BAREit® and Forever BARE BBL® devices. During your consultation, our licensed provider will assess your skin and hair type, discuss your medical history, potential side effects, hair removal goals, and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your needs.

It’s important to note, however, that gray hair, white hair, and vellus light-colored hair (peach fuzz) are not suitable for this treatment.

Is There Any Downtime After Laser Hair Removal Treatments?

Laser hair removal with the BAREit® and Forever BARE BBL® devices requires no downtime, allowing patients to resume their daily activities immediately after the procedure.

While adverse effects are rare, some may experience common side effects such as slight redness or sensitivity in the treated area, similar to mild sunburn, but these symptoms typically subside within a few hours to a day. After treatment, you may be given an anti-inflammatory cream to help manage these mild symptoms and to soothe the skin.

What Results Can I Expect from Laser Hair Removal?

After a series of treatment sessions, patients can expect a significant reduction in hair growth, with many experiencing long-lasting hair removal. The number of treatments required varies based on the individual’s hair type, color, and the area being treated, with most patients achieving optimal results after 6 to 8 sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Following the completion of the treatment plan, some patients may require occasional touch-up sessions to maintain their smooth, hair-free skin.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

The cost of laser hair removal is highly dependent on the size of the area being treated and how many sessions you need to achieve the full effects of laser hair removal.
