Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a procedure that improves skin texture, treating fine wrinkles and tightening the skin through tiny punctures on the skin surface.

With age, the outermost layer of skin becomes thinner and susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. This procedure stimulates the production of new collagen and the release of growth factors in the skin, which leads to smoother, tighter-looking skin.

This process uses sterile needle tips, with needle length varied by treatment, delivered through a handheld device.

Fine wrinkles or surface irregularities on the skin can be treated with a minimally invasive technique called microneedling. At Maryland Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer microneedling treatments for men and women in the Baltimore, Towson, and Columbia areas.

What Can Microneedling Treat?

This popular office treatment treats a variety of skin concerns, maintaining and delivering an overall more youthful appearance by stimulating the body’s natural healing process and an increase in collagen.

Microneedling procedures can be used to treat:

  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines & deep wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Stretch marks
  • Dull skin quality
  • Skin damage
  • General skin rejuvenation
  • Hyperpigmentation (dark spots)
  • Hair loss

What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

The minimally invasive procedure uses a device containing fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, leading to a wide range of anti-aging benefits for the skin.

Collagen Production: Simulate the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins essential for maintaining skin elasticity, firmness, and texture. Increased collagen production can help improve skin tone, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promote overall skin rejuvenation.

Improved Skin Texture: The cosmetic procedure refines the skin’s texture by minimizing the appearance of pores, acne scars, and other surface irregularities. The controlled micro-injuries created during the procedure encourage the formation of new, smoother skin tissue.

Enhanced Absorption of Topical Products: The microchannels created temporarily increase the skin’s permeability, allowing topical skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin. This enhances the effectiveness of serums, moisturizers, and other skincare products in conjunction with microneedling.

Reduced Hyperpigmentation: Treatments can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, age spots, and melasma. By promoting cell turnover and stimulating collagen production, microneedling can lead to a more even skin tone and complexion.

Treatment of Scars: This is an effective treatment option for various types of scars, including facial acne scars, surgical scars, deep scars, and stretch marks. The controlled injury created by the microneedling device encourages the formation of new collagen and elastin fibers, leading to improved scar texture and appearance over time.

Minimized Signs of Aging: Dermal remodeling with microneedling can address common signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. By promoting collagen production and skin renewal, microneedling can help restore a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the skin and even achieve a degree of skin tightening.

Safe for All Skin Types: Collagen induction therapy is suitable for all skin types and tones, making it a versatile option for individuals with diverse skincare concerns. It is minimally invasive and does not involve the use of heat or light, reducing the risk of pigmentation changes or other adverse effects commonly associated with certain laser or energy-based treatments.

Minimal Downtime: While some redness and mild swelling may occur immediately following microneedling, downtime is typically minimal compared to more aggressive skin resurfacing procedures. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a day or two after treatment.

How Many Microneedling Sessions Do I Need?

The procedure is recommended in a series of three to six treatments, four to six weeks apart. Depending on the amount of rejuvenation or correction needed, additional treatments may be required.

What Can I Expect from Microneedling?

The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia. Depending on the location and extent of treatment, topical anesthetic cream or injection of local anesthesia may be used to numb the treatment area.

The device is passed over the treatment areas creating controlled skin injury through micro punctures into the skin barrier.

Results are gradual and may become more noticeable over time as the skin continues to regenerate. It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure and use a high SPF sunscreen to protect the skin during the healing process.

How Long Do Results Last from Microneedling?

Results may be noticeable as soon as one week after the initial treatment and can last over a year. However, additional treatments are recommended for maximal benefit which will help produce truly long-lasting results.

Downtime & Recovery

The treated area may be slightly red (similar to a sunburn) for 24 to 48 hours, but if more extensive treatment is needed, the redness may last for up to a week. Some peeling or flaking may occur.

Post-care skin treatments can be prescribed to further help the recovery process.
